Ryzom - A Free-To-Play Fantasy/Sci-Fi Sandbox Game
Ryzom is a free-to-play fantasy/sci-fi sandbox that puts critical decisions in the hands of players and constantly evolves based on their actions. Updated for Steam launch, the game offers a unique spin on the genre with classless characters, advanced havesting and crafting, and the ability to interact with NPCs in fully-immersive roleplay. It also features a massive variety of activities including interactive events, guilds, and full consensual PvP (duels, outpost battles, faction of region fights). A huge part of the community has been supporting Ryzom's distinct take on MMORPGs since its debut in 2004.
The game's unique "improve through use" skill model allows players to improve any aspect of their character with a single point, rather than having to level a specific skill to make significant changes. This makes it possible to create and balance a wide range of techniques, from the power of an attack to the endurance cost of a harvest, allowing unprecedented customization in action-based gameplay.
Ryzom's sandbox world is set more than 2000 years in the future on a living, evolving planet called Atys. Featuring full day and night cycles, seasons, and weather, the world is open to exploration in any way that the player sees fit.
The game was created by independent French development studio Nevrax and its underlying engine, NeL, is freely available as open software under the GNU General Public License. The original version of the game was released in September 2004 under the name The Saga of Ryzom, and it received little attention at the time. It was later unified with three other servers into one world called Atys in 2012.
